Pedalling for a cure on Father's Day
19/08/09
Give dad a ‘gift with legs’ this Father’s Day - get on your bike for the Father’s Day Classic and help save men’s lives.

The Father’s Day Classic is a community cycling event to honour the men who have been lost to cancer, celebrate those who have survived and fund cancer research and prevention programs so that fewer men will be diagnosed with the disease.
Starting from the Eastern Parklands on Father’s Day, 6 September, there is a ride to suit the whole family – a 12 km Metro Family Circuit, a 42km Mt Lofty Circuit and a free Kid’s Fun Circuit.
Whether you’re a cyclist getting ready for the next Tour Down Under, a family looking for a fun way to spend Father’s Day, or you’re just passionate about fighting cancer, the Father’s Day Classic is a fun and easy event to participate in – just log onto fathersdayclassic.org.au or call 1300 65 65 85 to register.
Chief Executive Cancer Council SA, Professor Brenda Wilson said that last year’s inaugural event raised just under $20,000, a tremendous achievement for the first year of the ride.
“The money raised through last year’s Father’s Day Classic event was put toward research being conducted into better treatments for prostate cancer right here in South Australia by leading cancer researchers.”
“This year we hope more people will support the event enabling us to raise our target of $70,000, which will be invested into a similar cancer research, prevention or support program for men’s cancers,” said Professor Wilson.
Men are more likely to be diagnosed with cancer than women and are less likely to survive their diagnosis. The reason for this is that men typically stick their head in the sand when it comes to their health, so cancers are picked up later when survival chances are poorer.
“Events like the Father’s Day Classic are so important to get men talking about their health and to raise funds for more research into men’s cancers.”
“Women’s cancers have such a high profile and millions of dollars are put into breast cancer research each year. But, more men are diagnosed with prostate cancer than women are diagnosed with breast cancer. We need to raise the profile of men’s cancers so that they get the attention they so desperately need,” said Professor Wilson.
Guardian Insurance Brokers Pty Ltd have committed their support to the event for the second year running by not only sponsoring the event, but also by entering a Guardian Insurance Brokers team.
“What better way to spend Father’s Day than to take part in something that will help save the lives of many fathers, sons, brothers and uncles,” said Evan Jackson, Managing Director of Guardian Insurance Brokers.
“Sadly, cancer affects one in two men. So, we can be sure that it will touch one of our loved ones if it hasn’t already,” he said.
